(8/27/2009) Toytoa announced today it will end production at Fremont, California’s New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., better known as NUMMI, in March 2010.
NUMMI’s fate has been in doubt since June, when General Motors pulled out of a 25-year-old partnership with Toyota to build cars for both companies at what is the only auto plant on the West Coast. When GM emerged from bankruptcy, the company’s stake in NUMMI became part of Motors Liquidation Co. — to be liquidated under court supervision.
Since June, when GM pulled production of the Pontiac Vibe, workers at NUMMI assembled the Corola and Tacoma.
Before today’s announcement, California lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have appealed to Toyota to save Nummi and its 4,600 jobs, a majority of which are represented by the United Auto Workers union.
“We have a package of bills to let Toyota know that we love them and we want them to stay in Fremont,” said state Sen. Ellen Corbett, D-San Leandro, who drove from Sacramento to catch the tail end of the rally organized by the United Auto Workers, which represents about 4,600 factory employees.
I guess those ‘bills’ have to go elsewhere.
