How to Remove a Car Dealer Logo in 3-Steps

GM has decided to remove the ‘Mark of Excellence’ decal from all their cars, starting with the new Chevy Equinox. Obviously people don’t want big government branded on their cars — and that’s the primary reason GM is making the change.

Well, the ‘official’ reason (from the Wall Street Journal):

“We are just really focused on the four core brands and this provided us with another opportunity to make sure they were at the forefront.”

The strategy to more acutely focus marketing efforts on individual vehicle brands, while deemphasizing their connection to GM, is being spearheaded by Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, who recently was moved from a product development role in order to head marketing efforts. Mr. Lutz said in recent weeks that the company needs to do a better job of focusing the public’s attention on brand names because many Americans do not immediately associate those brand names with the company that went bankrupt.

But what if you own a car with a GM logo, or any other logo you want it off?

You can easily remove the decal in three easy steps.

How to Remove the ‘GM’ Decal

  1. Heat up the badge with a hair dryer. This makes the double-sided foam loosen up.
  2. Use dental floss to cut it. Tip: Go very slow, back and forth as if the floss is a saw. As you create the ’saw’ motion, pull the floss away from the car so it rubs against the badge and not the car. Feel free to alternate between heating the badge again and then resume flossing. Don’t worry if the floss breaks, just heat the badge and begin where where you left off.
  3. After the logo comes off, clean it up with microfiber chamois and WD-40.
